A Conversation With Haseena Shaheed-Jackson

Why do you believe SEL and EQ are important?

One must be aware of who they are in order to become the person they were created to be.  To know who you are is to get in touch and align with your feelings and thoughts which is possible through SEL and EQ.   Feelings and thoughts are the results of our values which are the foundation.  Values are the driving force behind all that you do and what you do.    Embracing SEL and EQ enables a person to have a foundation that will enable and empower them to keep pressing forward and living a purposeful life.

Do you have any personal anecdotes about how SEL/EQ has brought you success in your
personal life/career?

As an author, speaker, coach and trainer, I had to first know who I am in order to be able to serve, support and partner with others.  I cannot be effective if I am unaware of myself.  Prior to incorporating SEL and EQ, I was drifting through life, accepting what happened and occurred.  I was not connected to my feelings and emotions.  Getting in touch with my emotions and feelings required me to get in alignment with my subconscious because this is who is in the driver’s seat.  My subconscious is the keeper of my habits, values, and beliefs which drive and fuel my actions.   I partner with individuals and teams to help them see beyond their physical senses so that they can tap into their potential and raise the lid on their thinking.

What do you believe to be one or two of the main challenges in education (K-8) today?

Empowering and giving authority to believe in the power of thinking.  This will allow them to embrace their thoughts and feelings to promote the development of their own ideas and purpose.   Understanding the power of purpose is the driving force for our creation.

Conversely, what do you believe to be one or two of the biggest opportunities in education (K-8) today?

Expression of thoughts without being fearful of being rejected and ridiculed.  Let them know that they are valued so they in turn will value others.  Valuing people reduces stress, anxiety, feelings of isolation and depression.  When people are devalued it has a detrimental impact on their emotions and outlook on life.

What is the VALUE of an EQ Summit? An array of EQ/ SEL on-demand workshops? and or A summit that brings together parents and educators.?

Allows and empowers people to be authentic.  The summit is an environment filled with like-minded individuals who have similarities in purpose.  Promotes brainstorming and a master mind to identify opportunities and develop actions to effect change.
