A Conversation With Susan McVea
Why do you believe SEL and EQ are important?
More and more soft skills are what is setting each of us apart. Especially as more AI becomes prominent, our humanness is what will connect us together. Being mindful and aware not only of our intentions, but the impact of our actions and words is critical.
Do you have any personal anecdotes about how SEL/EQ has brought you success in your
personal life/career?
EQ has allowed me to excel in sales as an introvert by building deep connections and relationships based on shared values. Having better self awareness has helped me navigate stressful situations like deal negotiations, diffusing and resolving client issues and managing my own personal health. SEL strategies were foundational for overcoming a breakdown and chronic illness.
What do you believe to be one or two of the main challenges in Business Professionals today?
Feeling less connected, more isolated and alone despite the proliferation of technology that allows and promotes being “connected.”
Conversely, what do you believe to be one or two of the biggest opportunities in Business Professionals today??
Authentic leadership by going first and showing what’s involved. Not the highlight reel, but the reality of the journey. Too much of what we are seeing is not relatable, surface level and when we see truth telling from personal experience, the imperfections are refreshing, real and honest.
